Schatzberg knows the Lodz Film School from Adam Holender with whom he worked on ‘The Panic in Needle Park’.
The Lodz Film School is not an unknown place for Schatzberg. On the contrary, he was able to find out about it from Adam Holender, the director of photography of his film ‘The Panic in Needle Park’. During the meeting with the students on 8th November he quoted Holender. ‘Adam said to me: ‘Jerry, I’ve graduated from the Lodz Film School. Just tell me what you want and I’ll do it. That is how Schatzberg recalls his work with the Polish cinematographer.
'Nameless models, drug addicts from Needle Park, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Al Pacino – in all these people I looked for authenticity. This is the only thing worth showing. That is why I simply could not stand the extremely artificial domain which fashion is’ - Jerry Schatzberg spoke about his profession as special guest of the 18th European Cinema Forum ‘Cinergia’.
The director of the cult film ‘Scarecrow’ visited the Lodz Film School on the 8th November. Schatzberg is known in the US not only as a film director but also an exceptional photographer. He took the famous photographs of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors and Frank Zappa. The next step in his life, following the photographic career was opening a music club to which he would invite musicians, actors, and celebrities. – This was my solution for the crisis. Crowds of people would come to the club to enjoy themselves with my friends who up till then they knew only from television. On top of that, all the women wanted to be my girlfriends then!
Al Pacino, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway among others starred in his films. ‘I would sign them up for the film even before I had the screenplay ready’, admited Schatzberg. ‘I would develop it together with them. They often had amazing ideas, which I ‘usurped’ eventually and signed with my own name’, boasted the director. He agreed with somebody from the audience. ‘Yes, a film director is a cruel profession. I thrive, sponging off all these people. But I’m right to do so cause my genius tells me who to work with’.
A large part of the meeting was devoted to Schatzberg’s debut film ‘Puzzle of a Downfall Child” starring Faye Dunaway. The story of a famous model who suddenly becomes redundant was based on facts. ‘Anytime we can be made redundant and substituted by somebody else. And there is nothing we can do about it. It’s terrifying’ , says Schatzberg remembering the model from Paris "Vogue", on whom he based the story for his film.
