The Andrzej Munk Prize is awarded by the Lodz Film School to the makers of the best debut films. The competition is now open for entries. The winners will be announced in November.

The greatest filmmakers have received it: Skolimowski, Kieślowski, Żuławski. Since 1965, without fail, the prize was a beacon indicating those filmmakers whose careers should have been closely watched. The number of winners will grow this November.

Andrzej Munk’s filmography is not too long but very explicit. Both his films and their protagonists were daring, defiant and vivid. The character of Dzidziuś Górkiewicz from the film, "Heroism", played by Edward Dziewoński, becomes a hero of the Warsaw Uprising … by chance. Jan Piszczyk - the main character played by Bogumił Kobiela in the film "Bad Luck", tries to adapt to the ever changing situation in the country and always fails to do so. Eventually, he ends up in prison, where he wants to stay forever. With his films, Munk challenged national myths and questioned commonly accepted truths. He created protagonists entangled in history and politics, forced to fight, not live. He skillfully juggled with seriousness and wit, a documentary-like approach to life and its grotesque perception.

The jury will look for similar films, which are daring, searching for new means of expression; going against the flow, among this year’s competition entries. Film-makers and producers can enter their full-length feature films for the Andrzej Munk Prize competition by 15 September, 2014.

The films compete in two categories: Best Direction and Best Cinematography. These debut films will be evaluated by the jury consisting of Lodz Film School professors and students. Besides prestige, the prizes won in the competition are supposed to help the film-makers find distributors for their films.

The competition screenings will take place at the Lodz Film School cinema in October and the winners will be announced in November.

Andrzej Munk studied cinematography and film direction at the Lodz Film School. Since 1957, until his death in 1961 he was a Lodz Film School lecturer. He died tragically in a car crash at the age of 40 leaving behind the unfinished film, "Passenger".

The Andrzej Munk Prize is one of the oldest film awards in Poland. The first Andrzej Munk Prize Competition winner was Jerzy Skolimowski with his film, "Walkower" (1965). The following editions of the competition awarded select, young film-makers who nowadays have placed themselves among the best Polish representatives of auteur cinema. Among others, the Munk Prize was received by: Andrzej Żuławski for "Trzecia część nocy" (1971), Krzysztof Kieślowski for "Personel" (1975), Piotr Szulkin for "Golem" (1980), Mariusz Grzegorzek for "Rozmowa z człowiekiem z szafy" (1993), Łukasz Barczyk for "Patrzę na Ciebie Marysiu" (1999).
