We invite you to the meeting with Professor Marek Nowicki and the exhibition "Chronicles of a happy life". Venue: Pop-up Gallery Ogrodowa 8 in Łódź, May 14, 18:00 hrs.

Curator’s text:

Professor Marek Nowicki, cinematographer and director, views life and the world through the lens. "I frame the whole world! But I am not a photographer", he replies when I ask him about photography. I cannot agree with that, because I have thousands of photos scanned from film documentation in my hand, and thousands more from the chronicle of a happy life and travels.

The exhibition of Marek Nowicki's photographs is a selection of pictures from his life. A record of moments closed like time capsules, made with such tenderness and attention to the people portrayed. Looking at them, we instantly recognize and catch the emotions accompanying the author: affirmation of life, admiration for nature and architecture, love and care for loved ones, searching for beauty in detail.

Photography is his way of creating a relationship with space, people and objects. We look through thousands of frames for the exhibition, and Marek unmistakably indicates the place where they were taken, the direction of travel, the names of the people in the photo. He tells me why he pressed the button on the camera while looking at the stone. These photos are in him, they are moments of concentration and contemplation that materialize as photographs. The work of the cinematographer and director begins with a single frame; it is the beginning and end of the shot. It allows you to be here and now at the time of creating moving pictures. Professor Marek Nowicki is a master of craftsmanship and film art.

I will mention just a few of the huge number of productions in which he was the cinematographer or director: Rejs, Chłopi, Rodzina Połanieckich, Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy, Widziadło, Spowiedź dziecięcia wieku.

His vast knowledge of frame building and film planning also translates into photography. It was out of love for the image that he initiated the College of Photography and was its first director at the Łódź Film School in (PWSFTviT). In the years 1975-79 he was the Vice-Dean of the Cinematography Department, and in the period 1979-81 the Vice-Rector of the School.

Professor Marek Nowicki also sat in many representative bodies of higher education, including the Central Council of Science and Education (1988-91), the Council of Higher Artistic Education, of which he was the vice-chairman (1988-93), the Central Commission for Scientific Titles and Degrees (1994 -2002) and in the Art Section of the Central Commission, which he chaired in 2003-05. In May 2004, he was elected to the Scientific Research Committee - Humanities Group. He was vice-chairman of the Polish Filmmakers Society (1981-87), he was also a member of the Polish Committee for the World Decade of Cultural Development (1988-97), vice-chairman of the Main Qualification Committee of Film Professions (1988-92) and a member of the Awards Committee of the Ministry of Culture and Art.

He is the founder and president of the "Archiwum Fotograficzne Tułaczy" (“Photographic Archive of Wanderers") Foundation, which aims to collect photos from the period of the wartime wandering of children who, together with General Anders' army, left the USSR and then spent the years of the Second World War in Polish settlements and camps in Africa, India, Mexico and the Middle East. The Foundation has released two photo albums entitled „Tułacze dzieci” ("Wandering Children") (1995) and „Polska szkoła na tułaczych szlakach”("Polish school on wandering trails") (2004) and the film "Afrykańczycy. Archiwum Tułaczy” (Africans. The Archives of Wanderers) (1992), which he produced. Thanks to these social activities, about 12,000 children were identified!

He is a laureate of numerous awards and distinctions for his creative and teaching activities, including the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art (1991, 2005), the Medal of National Education (2000) and the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2005). In 2014, he received the Polish Filmmakers Association Award for lifetime artistic achievements.

"Me - Marek Maciej Nowicki - workhorse"
"Recently, my retirement pension was calculated, and then it turned out from the mathematical summation of the years of work that I worked a total of 100 years - nothing but a workhorse, because I am still a long way from a hundred years of life. The main components of this sum were years I had worked in cinematography and for some time, simultaneously at the Polish National Film School in Łódź and other universities. However, what is more significant for me is the issue of how to go through the years that may be left to me."

"And one more feature that I personally admire - the strength of the Professor's spirit. Despite the heavy life experiences, illness, loss of his loved ones, he was always able - literally and figuratively - to stand on his own feet, return to his beloved mountains, to the sea ..." We have to keep going ... "- the simplest words sometimes hide the greatest challenge, an act of will, the affirmation of life with its fragility and ephemerality. The first photo exhibition sums up the experiences and observations of the whole life. Thus, it fits in with the extraordinary biography of the Professor.
Marek Nowicki is the man through whom we discover new horizons. " Prof. Krzysztof Heyke

"I perfectly remember the first meeting with Professor Marek Nowicki. It is impossible not to remember the moment and the person who can change your life in a second, direct it in a different direction, give it a new shape. This was the case here. Poznań 1st Biennale of Polish Photography, 20 April 1998. The professor was still working on the staff for the College of Photography at the Łódź Film School. It turned out that he had me on his mind, which I did not know about. Surprised by the proposal I was trying to say: "No, I can't, I'm sorry – because of the exhibitions, trips, obligations, etc, etc, and that I am only a technician, forester, not suited for colleges, I can't do it, I don’t know how. "Back then I did not know that one does not turn down Professor Marek’s offer, that it is tactless. Even more so when he is the DOP of the famous Rejs (Cruise) - never! The professor replied: "This forest does not bother me. But please, give it a try. A week later, I was already at the Film School. And it started. I stayed."

"Professor Marek. Rationalist. Master of the Abstract. Simply Great." Prof. Wojciech Prażmowski
