She talked about how her books come into being, how her characters are born, and how their stories take shape. About freedom in writing—and the freedom which should also be granted to filmmakers.

Zyta Rudzka was our guest and she met with students.

What was the meeting about?

It covered how her books come into being, how her characters are born, and how their stories take shape. It explored the freedom inherent in writing—a freedom which should also be granted to filmmakers who adapt literature—as well as the cinematic potential of novels. It touched upon monologues, which pose a particular challenge for film. Prose versus cinema; language versus imagery. And, of course, it addressed Zyta Rudzka’s latest novel, „Only Fools Live to the End” (Tylko durnie żyją do końca).

An author of novels and dramatic works was the guest at the first event in the series "The Cinematic Potential of Literary Texts."
This series of meetings—aimed primarily, though not exclusively, at screenwriting students—features contemporary Polish writers whose works could serve as the basis for film adaptations or are already in the process of being adapted. The first guest was Zyta Rudzka, an author of novels and plays, who received the Gdynia Literary Prize for „Krótka wymiana ognia” ("A Brief Exchange of Fire"), the Gryfia Literary Prize for „Tkanki miękkie” ("Soft Tissues"), and both the City of Warsaw Literary Award and the Nike Literary Award for „Ten się śmieje, kto ma zęby” ("He Who Has Teeth, Laughs").

The meeting was hosted by Dr. Maciej Robert, our lecturer and Director of the House of Literature in Łódź.

Thank you for an inspiring meeting!
