The 6th edition of the Polish Film Festival in Fjarðabyggð, Iceland, is underway. The programme features films by our students and graduates.

The sixth edition of the Polish Film Festival in Fjarðabyggð draws upon the current body of Polish cinema to offer a deeply introspective portrait of a society in the midst of transformation.

By juxtaposing a contemporary palette of artistic expression means with the cultural codes of the now-distant 1980s, it captures the continuity of a national discourse within socially engaged cinema. Viewed against the backdrop of the global socio-political shifts of the 2020s, this discourse appears more relevant today than ever before.

This year’s film selection addresses themes that are engaging—and often polarizing—yet highly relevant, as they resonate with the everyday experiences of viewers, whether they identify with Poland or maintain a cautious, analytical distance from the country. At the same time, by highlighting the internationalization of "Polishness" as an acquired rather than an innate identity, this selection dismantles the anachronistic image of a monolithic Polish society. It invites subcultures from the "borderlands"—spaces defined by a constant, rhythmic cycle of endings and beginnings—to take a full part in the national discourse, as they drive social change right before our eyes.

The programme includes, among other things, student films from the Lodz Film School:

DICKFLIP dir. Dominik Hadziewicz
HELLO, HEADQUARTERS dir. Zuzanna Heller
LOOK HOMEWARD dir. Artem Rachkelyuk

as well as
KUMOTRY dir. Emilia Śniegoska (directing graduate; prod. Vision House)
CAPO dir. Robert Kwilman (directing graduate, prod. Nonoto Film Cooperative)

The Festival runs from 16 to18, October.
