It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell today to Ryszard Lenczewski—an outstanding cinematographer and a fantastic teacher who was associated with our School for over 30 years. Ryszard was a warm, generous, gentle, and sensitive man. He became one of the pillars of our Cinematography Department. He mentored generations of young filmmakers, instilling in them not only solid technical skills but also respect and love for our profession. He battled illness for several years, yet he continued to teach right up to the very end.

He was fascinated by the way film can capture emotions and subsequently evoke them in the viewer. This aspect of cinematography became the cornerstone of his unique teaching philosophy. Ryszard’s personality and artistic stature acted as a magnet, drawing successive cohorts of applicants to our School. We held his opinions in high regard; he was always among those who charted the course for our Department’s development.


Ryszard Lenczewski’s vast body of work comprises numerous documentaries, television productions, and feature films made in Poland and abroad—collaborations which include work with Paweł Pawlikowski, Andrzej Barański, Bogdan Dziworski, and Krzysztof Zanussi. His work has repeatedly garnered prestigious accolades, including the most coveted honors: an Oscar nomination and a BAFTA Award.

Ryszard has passed away, but he leaves behind unforgettable images, magnificent films, and a multitude of students with whom he generously shared his talent and sensitivity.
