Helena Stańczyk, author of the animated film I’M PAINTING A SELF-PORTRAIT, BUT ALL I SEE IS MY SISTER’S FACE, wins the New Horizons 2026 Shortlist!
The New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław concluded on August 2nd.
The winner of the Shortlist was Helena Stańczyk, our student and creator of the animated film "I'M PAINTING A SELF-PORTRAIT, BUT ALL I SEE IS MY SISTER'S FACE." The director was recognized for her formally sophisticated and artfully blending animation with a documentary portrait of the not-so-silent twin sisters exemplifying a creative dialogue between generations. A dialogue in which the young director, on the one hand, pays tribute to older artists and, on the other, asks them a penetrating question about whether the feeling of complete symbiosis with another person truly gives more than it takes away.
Helena was selected from among filmmakers under the age of 30. The best film was selected by representatives of the Zuzanna Jagoda Kolska Foundation and the New Horizons Association. The winner received an 8,000 PLN prize funded by the Zuzanna Jagoda Kolska Foundation, the AMA Film Academy, and the New Horizons Association, a voucher from Dr Irena Eris Cosmetics, and a unique statuette designed by Sebastian Pietkiewicz and crafted by the JULIA Crystal Glassworks.
