"Although the starting point is modellers and their practice of building gliders, at the heart of this series is a relationship, a closeness built slowly, through time and mindfulness, and the way in which knowledge is passed from hand to hand, from generation to generation, without haste and without unnecessary words. It is also knowledge rooted in materiality, often passed down not only orally, but through the same old books used by successive generations. Yellowed pages, diagrams, and notes become a parallel language of this practice.
The title "looking up" has a double meaning. On the one hand, it's a simple gesture, following a model floating above the horizon. On the other, it's a form of learning. Looking at someone who already knows. At their movements, decisions, patience. It's a way of building closeness which doesn't require many words.
My relationship with this world begins with a lack. I didn't have the opportunity to enter it with my father, only through a gray, closed box he doesn't want to talk about. Inside, fragments of models, small elements, traces of a former passion. Opening it, I found no answers, only questions. I began to look, first at objects, then at the people who still do this. I tried to imagine gestures that were once taken for granted. The time someone devoted to someone. A closeness I hadn't experienced.
It is an attempt to understand relationships through observation, and I construct my statement from fragments: glances, details, moments suspended between earth and sky. A record of the process of looking, which over time transformed into an attempt to get closer.
Work on the project began in Hubert Humka's class and continued in Jan Brykczyński's class, as part of the school's educational photography programme at the Cinematography Department.
