Join us for the opening of the exhibition ‘You Can't Map It’ on 11th June at 5 pm at the Szklarnia 2 Gallery!

What aspect of experiencing space remains personal and independent of external forces? The exhibition “You Can't Map It ” responds to young people’s experiences of uncertainty, constant movement, and the search for their own place. It brings up questions about nationality and borders, but also about the concept of belonging, which particularly shapes people born in a specific place and time. The exhibition is the result of a photo review by the Department of Photography at the Łódź Film School. The artists represent all years of the Department. The works come from various laboratories and present a broad approach to the medium of photography. Images, objects, video, and archival materials serve here as tools for exploring memory, the body, and the relationship with place.

The exhibition opens with works by Kacper Trzeci, which touch on places of memory – those that can be evoked by a single stimulus, sound, or image. Kacper Cichy and Natalia Dukin explore instinct and automatism. Cichy constructs a narrative through subjective connections between the image and sensory memory. Dukin focuses on the intuitive, bodily experience of objects. Eryk Siemianowicz conducts his explorations in “other people’s” spaces, photographing the studios of Polish artists. Stas Kravtsov and Olimpia Kopiec adopt a different strategy, subjecting their own image to artistic interventions and treating it as a field of experimentation. Kopiec’s practice draws on private archives and personal memories. Kravtsov, on the other hand, speaks of a sense of disorientation and the search for identity in a place that is new to him. Filip Karczewski’s work raises questions about national belonging and the concept of borders. Patrycja Chęcińska, in turn, creates her own frame of reference – full of blank spots, shifts, and ambiguous points of orientation. Benedykt Rogala works with found footage from a place and time where a sense of safety turns out to be dependent on global politics. This is a story about spaces that exist in memory, the body, and experience. Perhaps the most important places are precisely those that cannot be marked directly on a map.

The exhibition is part of the SpinOFF section of the International Festival of Photography in Łódź, Fotofestiwal.
