About the housing crisis. About identity which crumbles and is reborn. Finally, about a debut which is sailing into the open. At the Iluzjon Cinema, we welcomed the 19th Łódź cruise on the Wisła River

Krzysztof Brzezowski opened the 19th edition of the Lodz Film School Film Festival in Warsaw: "On board our ship, only good, young cinema by students of the Lodz Film School – 27 fiction films, documentaries, and animated films." Good cinema by filmmakers who will soon leave the School and start making feature-length films.

At the opening, we showed HEIMAT, Emi Buchwald's graduation film, which received the award for best student film from the Łodzią po Wiśle Review in 2017, and NO GHOSTS ON GOOD STREET, her feature-length debut.

The meeting, led by Bolesław Racięski, was attended by the director and co-creators: Karol Marczak – screenwriter, Tomasz Gajewski – cinematographer, Anna Łuka – editor, Patrycja Kycia – production manager, Ewa Mroczkowska – set designer, Katarzyna Gawlik – music composer, Aleksandra Landsmann – sound designer and Izabella Dudziak – actress.

Emi talked about the behind-the-scenes of the making of the film, including the search for suitable locations: "We spent a lot of time with Ewa and Tomek driving around Warsaw, looking for unused places where the old meets the new (...) where everything is falling apart on one hand, and developing on the other, just like the characters and their lives. This is a film (...) in which we define its convention from the very beginning. All these locations are significant in the context of the characters' moment in life and the city that influences them."

"Making a film in the current conditions and at such a low price is a challenge. Someone wants to follow the director, usually the artistic team, or the cinematographer, like the technical crew, or the production manager who has friends in the industry who want to help him. (...) I'm glad we managed to take advantage of this and that the film was a success," Patrycja Kycia said about the production challenges.

The conversation also touched on the method of filming the apartments and characters, editing, creating the sound layer, and creating roles, both collectively - the siblings and individual characters.

Thank you – for the conversation, the meeting and the moving debut!
