On the threshold of the bicentennial of the first recorded photograph, this extraordinary medium—always suspended between technology, art, and practical application—faces new challenges, questions, and paradoxes. Why, despite the dynamic development of digital image recording, are more and more people returning to analogue techniques? Does the fact that almost everyone has a camera in their pocket make us all photographers? How far will artificial intelligence, as it increasingly boldly enters the field of applied photography, go? Will it force artists to redefine the boundaries of the medium?

The 1st Bydgoszcz Photography Biennale is an attempt to explore these issues through the presentation of nearly 130 works by 68 artists. The exhibition showcases a diversity of approaches to the contemporary state of photography – from artists and academics, through artisans, to enthusiasts who don't pursue it professionally. The only criterion for participation was the approval of the majority of the jury members – which allowed for an openness to diverse artistic approaches and sensibilities, regardless of the participants' experience or status." The 1st Bydgoszcz Biennale of Photography will be held from 3rd to 24th September, 2025.

The Lodz Film School is the event's patron. The event is organized by the Museum of Photography in Bydgoszcz. Our Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Prof. Marek Szyryk, will serve on the jury.
