Yes, the Producer of the Year 2024! Our lecturer, MARIUSZ WŁODARSKI received the Piotr Woźniak-Starak Award of the Polish Producers Guild for the film THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE dir. Magnus von Horn.
THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE directed by Magnus von Horn is a Polish-Danish-Swedish co-production which had its world premiere in the Main Competition at the 2024 Cannes IFF. The film was the Danish candidate for the Oscar in the category of Best International Feature Film, and also won many awards: Silver Lions at the 49th Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia, the Golden Frog for our cinematography graduate, Michał Dymek (DOP) at the "Camerimage" International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography, European Film Awards (in the category of Best Production Design and Music), and also received many nominations for prestigious awards.
THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE
Karoline, a young factory worker, tries to survive in Copenhagen just after World War I. When she becomes pregnant, loses her job and is left to her own devices, she meets Dagmar - the charismatic owner of an illegal adoption agency which helps mothers find new homes for their unwanted children. Having no alternative, Karoline takes a job with Dagmar as a wet nurse. The women establish a bond, but Karoline's world falls apart when she discovers the shocking truth about her employer.
Mariusz Włodarski, a producer working at Lava Films, our graduate of the Film Art Organization Department and currently a lecturer at the Film and Television Directing Department, is a two-time winner of the Piotr Woźniak-Starak Award – the first time for 2021 (for NEVER GONNA SNOW AGAIN).
In this year's edition, the award in the series category was presented to Łukasz Dzięcioł and Piotr Dzięcioł (graduate of the Film and Television Production Organization Studies) for the series IDŹ PRZODEM BRACIE (GO AHEAD, BROTHER) directed by Maciej Pieprzyca.
PIOTR WOŹNIAK-STARAK AWARD
The Special Award is to recognize and appreciate the work of those without whom no film would ever get made. Film producers are figures in the cinema who often stand in the shadow of their productions. We want to appreciate their courage, determination and intuition. To reward them for their innovation, ability to break glass ceilings and their positive contributions to the film industry. Each year, members of the Polish Producers Guild honour a selected filmmaker with the Producer of the Year Award for a completed film or series that premiered in cinemas or on streaming platforms, regardless of genre and form.
Congratulations to the producers!
