On 14, May, at 2 p.m., Łódź UNESCO City of Film invites you to the unveiling of JERZY SKOLIMOWSKI's star in the Łódź Walk of Fame in Piotrkowska Street.
This will be the hundredth star on the Łódź Walk of Fame!
The joy is even greater because it will honour the outstanding graduate of the Lodz Film School, JERZY SKOLIMOWSKI.
Director, screenwriter, actor, film producer, representative of the third wave of Polish cinema, painter, poet and musician, and in his youth also a boxer. Acclaimed by viewers and critics. Awarded and nominated for the most important awards at international and national film festivals - winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin, the Golden Lion in Venice, the Golden Omb in Mar del Plata, the Golden Lion in Gdynia, special awards in Cannes, Venice, Tokyo and an Oscar nomination.
For "the independent attitude of the Polish creator of global cinema, realized in Poland and abroad, as well as permanent ties with Poland", Jerzy Skolimowski was honoured with the Eagle Special Award in 2003, and 19 years later, with the Eagle for Life's Achievements. In 2016, he received the Venice Golden Lion for lifetime achievement award.
The director's work and attitude also received appreciative recognition with state awards. In 2005, he was awarded the Gloria Artis gold medal for Merit to Culture, and in 2011, during the ceremony at Wawel Castle on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of democratic Poland, with the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. President Bronisław Komorowski thanked representatives of culture for "wisely building Poland's regained freedom (...), which allows us to show not only the need for courage, but also beauty to make the world better."
In the same year, France honoured the director with the Officer's Cross of the Order of Arts and Literature (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres). "For your commitment and courage of opposition, in which you remain resistant to conformism, for looking at common dramas as individual and personal matters, thus bringing renewal to the language of cinema," said Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand and added: "Rebellious spirit, (...) free, always in motion, endowed with intuition, combining cinema based on social reality with pure poetry - together with Andrzej Wajda and Miloš Forman, you are the core of the Eastern avant-garde, in which you remain a colourful outsider.
