Full of details and a true story behind. Our guest, Andrew Sodroski specializes in the genre true crime and he will conduct a screenwriting workshop about the first season of the "Manhunt" series.

The workshop will run on Friday, 2nd June and it will be closed for Lodz Film School students. The meeting will be moderated by the Film School’s screenwriting lecturer, Eliza Subotowicz.

An American screenwriter Andrew Sodroski, the co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of the drama TV series “Manhunt: Unabomber,” will walk us through the process of developing and writing a TV show: from the initial idea and the pitch, writing the pilot script and breaking the season in the writers room to writing episodes and finally to production, in this all-day case-study class.

The students will learn about the process of writing a TV show from the concept to the finished product, the different stages of developing a show, the role of the showrunner throughout the process, their relationship with the producers and the network, the organization and operation of the writers room, and the challenges one faces when writing a TV show. The class will be based on real materials produced in the process of writing “Manhunt: Unabomber” and the discussion will be illustrated by relevant examples from the filmed version of the show. The students will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a discussion on the screenwriting process, and more.

Structure of the class:
Part I – How To Sell a TV Show
Andrew will start by telling us about the initial article he received which the show was to be based on, and the challenges he faced when conceiving his idea for the show. He will recount how he went about preparing a pitch for the network and then he will “reenact” the pitch the way he presented it to the producers/network.

Part II – The Pilot
Andrew will talk about the process of working on the pilot: the outline and the script, including the notes he received from the producers and the network and how they were incorporated into subsequent drafts. He will then discuss at length one of the versions of the pilot, which the students will have read beforehand, and together they will compare it with the filmed pilot episode.

Part III – Breaking the Season
Andrew will start with the second pitch he did in which he presented the whole season of the show. He will discuss putting together the writers room and how he worked with the writers on breaking the whole season. He will use one episode as an example to talk in detail about working with index cards and boards, outlining the episode, breaking it into acts, getting notes and incorporating them while working on the script.

Part IV – Production
Andrew will shed light on the showrunner’s role in pre-production (e.g. casting) and during production, which sometimes involves rewriting or writing new scenes. This part will be shorter to allow time for questions from the students.
