A film written and directed by our PhD student Damian Kocur and Anastasia Solonevych is among 11 international films competing for the Golden Palm of the Cannes Film Festival.
A 15-minute-long fiction film AS IT WAS is a Polish-Ukrainian co-production. Its heroine Lera has been living in Berlin since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. One day, she decides to return to Kiev. On the way, she learns that her family members are not in the capital and that they will return the next day. She spends the day waiting for her relatives in the company of a friend.
The film was shot in January and February this year in Kiev and Berlin. The screenwriters and directors of the film are Damian Kocur and Anastasiia Solonevych. Damian Kocur, a PhD student at the Lodz Film School, is also the cinematographer for AS IT WAS and its editor. Tadeusz Chudy was responsible for the sound, and Łukasz Kaczmarski for sound post-production. In the role of Lera - Valeria Berezovska.
Katowice-based Exa Studio is responsible for the production. The producer of the film is Piotr Steczek (Exa Studio) and co-producer - Mikołaj Lizut (Lizart Film).
Damian Kocur is a director and cinematographer. A graduate of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School in Katowice and a PhD student at the Lodz Film School. He is the author of the internationally awarded feature debut BREAD AND SALT (awarded at festivals in Venice, Cairo, Cottbus, Antalya, Gijon, Bratislava and Gdynia) and numerous short films, including IT'S STILL DAY, MY HEART and NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN. As a filmmaker, he keeps track of the credibility of emotions on the screen, and considers the authenticity of the characters and their stories to be his most important goal.
Anastasiia Solonevych is a debuting director from Kiev. In 2020, she graduated from the Film and Television Directing Department of the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. As a director, she has made music videos, one of which was awarded at the Prague International Film Festival in 2022. Since 2017, she has been working as an assistant director, as well as in other positions on commercials, feature films and TV series.
