This is what Joanna Jasińska-Koronkiewicz, our school professor and animation lecturer and also the originator of the shows, says about the compilation:
When I add the adjective "feminine" to the word "cinema", I find myself in a space full of stereotypical and not necessarily good associations. The question arises, what female cinema is about that requires such a clear separation and whether it will really be for me, as a woman, interesting.
Therefore, when arranging this programme for you, I did not think about "women's cinema" but rather about the women’s world and their perspective shown by great animators in the medium of animated film. This world sparkles with a wealth of topics, a variety of forms and accurate observation – ranging from the satirical portrayal of the roles of mother, daughter and grandmother in Paulina Ziółkowska's film entitled "3 Genarrations", to a strong voice regarding discrimination against women in public space, in Karina Paciorkowska's animated manifesto "You Are Exaggerating".
What else are female animators interested in? Themes related to the acceptance of one's own body and sexuality come to the fore - especially in the context of socially imposed norms. Honoured with many awards at festivals, charming films such as "Pussy" by Renata Gąsiorowska, "My Fat Arse and I" by Yelisaveta Pysmak, " Lushfulness" by Weronika Szyma, "Hierophany" by Maria Nitek, "Norma" by Agata Mianowska or the more universal " Foreign Body" by Marta Magnuska, show various aspects of these issues.
An equally important theme is the relationship between mother and daughter ("Guilt" by Marcjanna Urbańska), between sisters ("Five Minutes Older" by Sara Szymańska) or the various faces of the relationship (the nostalgic "Ashes" by Joanna Dudek, "Conversation" by Marta Koch "And Something Else” and “So" by Olga Kłyszewicz, "A Whole Life with My Cat" by Zuzanna Shor, "Źle" by Pola Włodarczyk and "Osnowa" by Joanna Szlembarska). The theme of motherhood and entanglement in life's journey is taken up by Anita Kwiatkowska - Naqvi (Ab ovo, Locus) in her films, while the desire to connect with nature is presented to us by Julia Benedyktowicz in the film entitled "Cycle". The whole programme is held together beautifully by the opening film "Portrait of a Woman" by Natalia Durszewicz, which was inspired by Wiesława Szymborska's poem of the same title. This is us, women - so familiar to one another and similar and at the same time so different that they cannot be closed in any definitions and frames. I cordially invite you to the screening of student animated films THROUGH THE EYES OF A WOMAN.
