On 1, March, 1998, the Internet Database of Polish Film - FILMPOLSKI.PL was launched. We all use it every day. Read about its beginnings.
- To be honest ... the website itself was created rather by accident - says today Jarosław Czembrowski, originator and founder of the FILMPOLSKI.PL website, director of the Lodz Film School Library.
- I don't remember the first day exactly, I remember the 1990s more, then, here in the Library, we created the first film databases and that's how it all started - he recalls. Coincidence, or maybe destiny?
Early 1990's.
People come to or call the Film School Library asking for information about films - employees leaf through press publications, page by page, find what is needed, answer more questions. What year is this film from? Who was the DOP? What was the title? At that time, Elżbieta Jędraszczyk is the director of the Film School Library and Jarosław Czembrowski works with her.
From the demand for data collection to serve the daily work of the Library, an idea arises. Jarosław Czembrowski and the Library Director go to the then Rector of the School - Henryk Kluba, with the idea of buying computers to create a database of films. The Rector agrees and three computers will appear soon in the Library. The library team work on the first computer database devoted to Polish film begins.
Year 1997.
The Internet becomes available! It is expensive, difficult to master and requires equipment, but – it’s available. Jarosław Nizel gives Jarosław Czembrowski an idea to apply to the Scientific Research Committee for funding to create an internet database. It worked. The Library database, which had been created for 8 years, is made available to the world on March 1, 1998!

FILMPOLSKI.PL is 25 years old. It is used by about 100-110 thousand users daily, and 150 thousand at peak times. It is a tool for the daily work of filmmakers, journalists, film experts and all those who care about film. 6,952 entries of full-length feature films and short films, 21,331 entries of documentary productions, 2,844 animated productions, 1,162 series (a total of 39,763 episodes), 8,992 student films made at all film schools operating in Poland, and 4,918 TV shows. On the website, we can find 111,300 entries of people creating films - creators, co-creators, members of all technical departments. The website currently has 4.96 million unique users generating 37.65 million views per year.
- We are glad that we have become a reliable source of information about film in Poland, a source that others refer to, which proves that we have a significant reputation - says Jarosław Czembrowski today, for whom 1, March, 2023 is ... a day of work introducing information on another feature-length film to the database. Every day, there are 3-4 titles with different data volumes. Feature films, student films, series, independent short films, television theatre plays. No film credit will be missed out.
FILMPOLSKI.PL is appreciated by the film community. It has won the award of the Polish Film Institute in the category of INTERNET PORTAL twice and was nominated for this award twice. The entire film community uses it for everyday work. It is professional, up-to-date and reliable.
