The "Kolekcja/Assemblage" exhibition in Copenhagen is a presentation of photographic achievements of a group of students from the Photography Faculty of the Łódź Film School.
Marek Szyryk, Anna M. Zarychta:
Assemblage is a "set/collection" of faces, bodies, places, items, and emotions, which, combined
in a random/not-random manner, evoke new impressions and new "thought-items". A
small detail, color, or gaze, can point to connections, clashes, punctures, and
new discourses.
What is the essence of a
“set” of photographs? What do images want with us, and what do they do to us?
We have to answer these questions ourselves; not just as recipients, but also
as creators. The new spirit/eidos – to paraphrase Roland Barthes – reveals
itself in the chorus of Look-here… - in gestures of choice, indication,
confrontation and individual experience.
Photography has been a part
of the Łódź Film School (PWSFTviT) for 65 years. Initially a means of educating
new cinematographers, it eventually became a stand-alone department. Regardless
of the field - be it Cinematography, Animation, or Photography - it is
important for us to relay the maximum amount of education, resulting in a
well-thought image - an outcome of consciously chosen subjects, forms, and
means of artistic expression. The curriculum is based on a "workshop system",
directed by photography and cinematography lecturers. Photography –
documentary, classic, or creative – is combined with multimedia endeavors;
applied workshops are supplemented by the history and theory of visual culture,
in its broadest sense. Such association of photography and film, characteristic
for the Film School, has been underlined by the activities of Warsztat Formy
Filmowej (Film Form Workshop) – an avant-garde art group based at the School,
active in the 1970s. Their pursuits are now continued by Warsztat Nowych Mediów
(New Media Workshop) and Videopunkt.
During these two decades, there have been over 500 graduates of the
Photography Faculty. Many of them have made significant contributions to the
global artistic heritage. PWSFTviT alumni are now lecturers of many art schools
and have participated in art exhibitions and festivals, both in Poland and
abroad.
