Fourth year students of acting are working on their diploma play "Leonce and Lena" directed by Łukasz Fijał, a drama direction student from the Cracow Drama School. The premiere on 5th April.

- "If only for a moment was it possible to become somebody else. Even just for a moment." This quotation from Buchner is very significant for the play - says Łukasz Fijał. Everybody wants to be somebody else, in every aspect : emotional, statuswise, economic.

The director from the Cracow Drama School started his work on the play in Lodz already a year ago. – I used to come to the Lodz Film School for the exams of acting students and  I watched them perform – says the director.

The play is based on Georg Buchner’s text from the period of German Romanticism. – The language of the text is contemporary and feels comfortable  thank to Łukasz Fijał, who decided to translate Buchner’s original himself  - says Anna Wysocka, one of the actors.

The young director has already directed two plays ("Brzydal" at the Ludwik Solski Theatre in Tarnow, and "Miedzianka" at the Norwid Theatre in Jelenia Góra). Why has he chosen the play  "Leonce and Lena"?

- We are working on a diploma performance, so I made sure to provide a play enabling the students to present themselves at their best.  I hope that both the actors and the audience will admit that there’s plenty to perform in the play.  – says the director.

The students are enjoying their work with the director.  – He is very open, also to suggestions regarding the performance, so we can all contribute and create it. - says Joanna Monowid, a student  of production management who is working as the play’s producer. – The director is a young person, like us, so we understand each other very well. – adds  Anna Wysocka.

- We cannot wait to perform. We trust  Łukasz entirely, he gives us precise advice  and yet does not overload us with information. - remarks Mariusz Krakowiak, 4th year acting student.
Łukasz Fijał mentions symbolic facts which can hardly be unnoticed:: - Buchner wrote the play at the age of 24, I translated it being 24, and the students playing are also the same age. It’s an enterprise oozing energy of the young!

Songs have also been incorporated in the play: - Since it is our diploma the songs will help us present our abilities more thoroughly. - says  Mariusz Krakowiak, who plays  Valerio.

The song lyrics have been derived from  Georg Buchner’s text.

The characters in the play are performed by: Michał Barczak, Paweł Dobek, Anna Pijanowska, Mariusz Krakowiak, Patryk Palusiński, Anna Wysocka, Jacek Knap and Jakub Kryształ. Art direction - Ewelina Pietrowiak; music - Bartosz Dworak, production manager - Joanna Monowid.

The premiere has been scheduled for 5 April at the Studyjny Theatre in Lodz.
