Bartosz Świniarski, a Lodz Film School cinematography student, wins Vilko Filač prize at the festival in Küstendorf for photography for Martin Rath film "Arena".
The festival jury including
Janusz Kamiński and Goran Vlatević, unanimously agreed that Bartosz
Świniarski should be the prize winner because the film Arena shot by him “ definitely stood out in terms of using the visual aspects in telling the
story”.
Martin Rath, a Lodz Film School direction student who directed the fiction student film “Arena”, is also the screenwriter of the film. The film has been shot by Bartosz Świniarski, with Marcin Kowalczyk playing the main part (who also played "Magik" in "Jesteś Bogiem" by Leszek Dawid). The film was made under the artistic supervision of Mariusz Grzegorzek and Ryszard Lenczewski. It is an amazing story of a young hitch-hiker who ends up in Bieszczady Mountains and joins a group of locals, who are strong, original and charismatic people. Fascinated by them and the wilderness of the place the protagonist decides to face the challenge. "Arena" directed by Martin Rath also won the 58. Cork Film Festival 2013 receiving the Grand Prix International. The festival jury statement said:
“From the first to the final frame, “Arena” maintains a threatening ambiguity. Shot in a perpetual twilight, things are always about to get dark, and Rath’s immense skill is to hold the tension as the film oscillates between machismo and sensitivity”.
