At first, photography was treated as a scientific tool. It proved to be useful in psychiatry where it helped to file the symptoms of both health and illness. Nowadays, the art of photography is used as a medium in psychiatric therapy. However, in the history of photography we can find seemingly crazy artists next to those completely sane who were fascinated by the subject of madness, psychic disorders and abnormalities. Still, at the same time, photographic experiments, games and tricks provided firm, or not so firm, evidence, that photography itself cannot be treated merely as a mirror reflection of the real world. Is there madness in photography itself, then? Both have things in common. This, and other issues devoted to photography and madness will be discussed during the conference held at the Lodz Film School (Film Studio) on 24 and 25 November.
