Andrzej Wajda, a great film and theatre director, Lodz Film School graduate and Doctor Honoris Causa, died at the age of 90.

In the eyes of the world Wajda is a synonym of Polish Cinema. His career path started at the Lodz Film School where he studied film direction to graduate in 1953. In 2000, the school granted its outstanding graduate the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. Andrzej Wajda passed away at the age of 90 leaving behind dozens of excellent films which were awarded the greatest film awards including the American Film Academy Life Achievement Award received by him in 2000. Many of his films were based on Polish literature classics, many others commented Polish political and social situation of the past and present. He was an artistic director of “X” Film Production Unit where such directors as Agnieszka Holland and Ryszard Bugajski made their first films. Wajda was a member of the European Film Academy and an honorary chairman of the Polish Film-makers’ Association. His last film "Powidoki" about an artist Władysław Strzemiński, is a Polish entry for the American Film Academy Awards. The film’s premiere will take place in January 2017.
