Klara Kochańska and Zuza Kernbach received in person the Bronze Student Academy Award for the film “Tenants” in Foreign Narrative Category.

The Student Oscar is the first Academy Award won by our students. The film “Tenants” was shot by Zuzanna Kernbach. The film’s artistic supervisors were Robert Gliński, Wojciech Marczewski, and Jerzy Zieliński. Both students, Klara Kochańska and Zuza Kernbach , received the Bronze Award in person during the ceremony at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on 22 September.

The two other winning films in the Foreign Narrative Category were: Gold: “Invention of Trust,” Alex Schaad, University of Television and Film Munich (Germany)
Silver: “Where the Woods End,” Felix Ahrens, Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF (Germany)

The screenplay of the film written by Klara Kochanska and Kasper Bajon tells a story of Justyna, a young woman who buys a flat at a bailiff auction regardless the risk it may bring. When she wants to move in it turns out that the keys she was given do not fit the locks. A dream about a place of her own turns into a nightmare.

The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972. Each year, the Academy grants awards in four categories: animated film, documentary, fiction film and alternative film. Despite the same categories American students enter separate competition from foreign ones. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 46 Oscar nominations and have won or shared eight awards. They include, among others, Robert Zemeckis and Spike Lee. Although a couple of student films from Lodz Film School have been nominated to the Student Academy Award, Klara Kochańska’s film is its first winner.
