Jan Bratkowski studied acting and direction at the Warsaw Drama School. He started his professional career as an assistant to such famous artists as Erwin Axer and Konrad Swinarski. Bratkowski directed many plays staged at Dramatyczny and Polski Theatres in Warsaw. He also directed dozens of plays for television.

As a Film Direction Department lecturer he educated many generations of directors at the Lodz Film School
