Our students’ diploma play, Gombrowicz’s "The Wedding" directed by Waldemar Zawodziński is being staged at the Radom Powszechny Theatre tomorrow.

Fourth year Lodz Film School acting students performing in the play are: Mikołaj Chroboczek (Father), Marta Herman (Mother), Sebastian Jasnoch (Drunk), Michał Jóźwik (Chancellor), Marcin Miodek (Henryk/Władzio), Anna Mrozowska (Mania), Grzegorz Otrębski (Henryk/Władzio). Costumes were designed by Maria Balcerek, tango choreographed by Edyta Wasłowska, direction and art direction by Waldemar Zawodziński. Waldemar Zawodziński, who is the artistic director of the Jaracza Theatre in Lodz, has directed theatre plays, operas and musicals, amongst others, at the Stary Theatre in Krakow, the Współczesny Theatre in Szczecin, the Nowy Theatre in Poznan, the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk, the Wielki Theatre in Łodz, Krakow Opera House and the National Opera in Warsaw.

The International Gombrowicz Festival is an event, which from its very beginnings has had an interdisciplinary character combining theatre, science, criticism, art, music, and film. It performs the role of a forum to exchange opinions, experience and new interpretations of Gombrowicz’s work relevant to contemporary world. In the first editions of the festival, Rita Gombrowicz, the playwright’s widow, was the festival patron. Since its 8th edition, the festival has taken on the form of a competition, in which the festival jury consisting of theatre critics, directors, and theoreticians evaluate the plays.

The choice of Radom as the site, where every other year the festival takes place, is not accidental. The Gombrowicz family estate, where Witold was born, used to be in Małoszyce near Radom. In another place called Wsola, there was a residence where Gombrowicz’s brother Jerzy lived from 1924-1939. This was often frequented by Witold Gombrowicz himself where he would spend most of summer months. Nowadays, the villa houses the Witold Gombrowicz Museum. It is there that Witold’s literary ideas originated. The nearby villages are also mentioned in Gombrowicz’s literary works. Finally, this part of Poland is where most of his family members were buried.
