Every Thursday, at 7 p.m. sharp, the inhabitants of Łódź will be able to see four strong and important titles - "Anatomy of a Fall" by Justine Triet, winner of the Palme d'Or in Cannes, with the electrifying role of Sandra Hüller ("The Zone of Interest", "Toni Erdmann"), showered with awards Aki Kaurismäki's bittersweet story "Fallen Leaves" and the shocking film indictment of Russia "20 Days in Mariupol" by Mstyslav Chernov. On the last Thursday of April, we will meet the creators of "Grandpa's Orchard", a documentary in which we accompany a young Polish woman on a journey through Volhynia, so this time we will also touch on Polish-Ukrainian topics.

“Grandpa’s Orchard” plus a meeting with the director of this documentary.
The documentary by Karol Starnawski, a graduate of the Lodz Film School, is a story about Karolina, a young Polish woman who sets out on a journey through Volhynia, where her family comes from. Her relatives were murdered during the so-called The Volhynian Massacre in 1943. Karolina travels on foot, Ukrainian cinematographer Oleksandr accompanies her with his camera, and she struggles with the pain of trauma. The heroes talk to the inhabitants of Volhynia about past events. It is a film about fragments of good, about memory and coming to terms with one's past. This is the voice of the young generation in the process of Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation. After the screening, on 25, April 2024, there will be a meeting with director Karol Starnawski.

Palme d'Or from Cannes to the Film School Cinema
If you haven't had the opportunity yet, it's worth going to the screening of "Anatomy of a Fall" which is one of the most talked-about films of the year, winner of an Oscar for best original screenplay and two Golden Globes, as well as the Palme d'Or in Cannes. The film is a masterful thriller whose suspenseful plot unfolds as you watch it. It is more than just a murder investigation, it's a disturbing journey into the middle of a tumultuous relationship in a seemingly happy marriage. The main role is played by the phenomenal Sandra Hüller, nominated for an Oscar. The life of a happy family in the French Alps is interrupted when Samuel dies in a fall. Did he jump himself, slipped, or was it Sandra, his wife and mother, who pushed him off the balcony? Investigators lack evidence and the case also lacks witnesses. The process that interests everyone is also taking place in the viewers' heads, and the question we are looking for the answer to is: 'Did she do it?'

Humour, emotion, deep humanism
One of the most important creators of contemporary European cinema, Aki Kaurismäki, has returned in great style with another excellent, bittersweet story that wins the hearts of both critics and audiences. An innocent, beautiful feeling blooms before our eyes, although on the radio in the background, we hear that dramatic events related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine are taking place. The award-winning film is an extremely charming story about life's outsiders (two nominations for the Golden Globes, the Jury Prize at the Cannes Festival, five nominations for the European Film Awards and a shortlist for this year's Oscars, as well as many other distinctions and awards). In the film, which is a celebration of small moments and inconspicuous gestures, there is room for humour, emotion, deep humanism, but also a commentary on current socio-political events.

A shocking film indictment of Russia
"20 Days in Mariupol" is an Oscar-winning film in the best feature-length documentary film category. It is a documentation of the destruction of Mariupol shot by the only correspondent who remained in the besieged city until the end at the risk of his own life. It is an uncompromising testimony which cannot be forgotten, a piercing, passionate indictment. And at the same time, it is a full-fledged film work, made with impressive formal discipline. Few films can be watched with such suspense - from the first minutes to the end; it shows how it was possible to take this shocking footage out of the occupied zone. Few creators show the merciless cruelty of war with such power. But Chernow and the crew don't do it to shock. Their intention is to leave a testimony - and shock the conscience of the world.
