A documentary film by our lecturers - Przemysław Miękinia and Jarosław Wszędybył - is in the competition of the South East European Film Festival to be seen by viewers in Paris, Berlin and Washington.

A documentary film by our school lecturers, producer Przemysław Miękinia and director and screenwriter Jarosław Wwszydybył, has qualified for the competition screenings of the 12th edition of the South East European Film Festival. Viewers in Paris, Berlin and Washington will be able to see it from 1 to 6, June.

The inhabitants of the village of Tichilesti in eastern Romania live far from civilization, in silence, among dogs and cats walking the streets. Their everyday life follows the rhythm of nature, which is determined by the changing seasons. But this peace means death, for Tichilesti is a place where lepers were sent years ago. During the communist era, the village was erased from the map by order of the authorities, and its inhabitants were forbidden to leave the area.

Today, in Tichilesti, also known as the Valley of Tears, only a few last remaining residents live. Despite the fact that leprosy has long ceased to be dangerous in Europe, Tichilesti still has a bad reputation as a leper colony. It remains hidden among the forests, off the beaten track, doomed to slow, silent passing, not visited even by family members of its lonely inhabitants.

The Polish-Romanian documentary "The End of the World in the Valley of Tears" tells the story of this slow, silent passing and longings of people living in anticipation of the end of their own little world. The film is directed and based on the screenplay by Jarosław Wszędybył who conducts classes with our students at the Film and Television Directing Department and at the Film Art Organization Department. The producer of the film is Przemysław Miękinia from Before My Eyes, a lecturer at our Film Art Organization Department, and the co-producers are: Polish Television, Uni-Solo Studio and FixaFilm. On the Romanian side, "The End of the World in the Valley of Tears" was produced by Parada Film (Oana Iancu, Calin Peter Netzer) in cooperation with Televiziunea Romania. Moreover, the entities co-financing the production of the film were: CNC Romania and the Polish Film Institute.

Other people associated with our school also worked on the film. The film was shot by our cinematography graduates Michał Gruszczyński and Filip Drożdż. The co-editor was Tammy Mehanni, a graduate of our Editing Department. Jarosław Wszędybył's documentary premiered at the 2022 New Horizons Festival. Last year, the film received the Young Critics Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Man in Danger Media Festival. Thanks to the qualifications for the South East European Film Festival, one of the most important events focused on the presentation of the best films from the region of South-East Europe (Greece, Albania, Romania, countries of the former Yugoslavia, etc.), "The End of the World in the Valley of Tears" will be presented to viewers in Paris , Berlin and Washington, and as part of the competition screenings it will be judged by three different juries - the European Jury, the American Jury and the Youth Jury.

The 12th South East European Film Festival takes place from 1 to 6, June.

Fingers crossed!
