GAUDEAMUS IGITUR. The Lodz Film School inaugurated the academic year 2022/2023. We came back to School after the holidays, richer with memories, experiences and 205 talents.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the invited guests, including: Jarosław Wartak, Director of the Department of Artistic Education at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, who read the letter from Prof. Piotr Gliński, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage;
Adam Pustelnik, first Vice President of Łódź City;
Jacek Grudzień, Deputy Manager of the Department of Culture in Łódź City Council;
Monika Głowacka, Head of Łódź Film Commission;
Waldemar Drozd, President of Educational Film Studio;
Gabriel Gietzky, PhD, Director of Pinokio Theatre in Łódź.

The Rector mentioned the lecturers, associates and friends of the School who passed away in the last academic year: Prof. Krzysztof Indecki, Dariusz Grzywacz, Paweł Kwiek and Andrzej Różycki.

Then, Rector Milenia Fiedler read to the gathered group of institutions’ representatives, professors, students and employees the protest of the Conference of Rectors of Art Schools against the deepening under-financing of art schools. The Rector turned to the students with a cordial welcome, an appeal and an invitation to create an artistic COMMUNITY within the walls of the School:

- What is your responsibility? Finding your own, personal and intimate answer to the question of what art is. What is film and theatre for me? What do I want to create for? What is my duty and responsibility as an artist?
The phenomenon of cinema and theatre, its strength and importance as a tool for communicating ideas, expressing the truth about the past, present and future of the cultural community from which it comes has been described many times by philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists and, above all, the creators themselves. You will learn about these ideas here, within the walls of the School, and you will hear about them from us, the teachers. But the most important are your own answers and your own sense of meaning and responsibility for what your voice expressed in your creative work is to serve.

- How, in a world flooded with exhaustive media reports, simulations of experiences and spooky predictions, can we go beyond the endlessly repeated numbers to experience the sacred inviolability and limitlessness of a single life, ecosystem, friendship, or the extraordinary play of light in the sky?

HOW?

- It is a time for us to deeply refresh our minds, senses, imagination, as well as our stories and our future. This work cannot be done alone and in isolation. Theatre is an invitation to do this work together. Theatre, film, art - is a call to do this work TOGETHER.

So TOGETHER we participated in the matriculation of first-year students as well as in awarding PhD degrees.

And one more JOINT, joyful moment - the Rector presented the Honorary Title of Professor Emeritus to Jerzy Matula, lecturer at the Film and Television Directing Department.

The inauguration was accompanied by a musical show by the 2nd year students of the Acting Department under the supervision of Joanna Gogulska who accompanied them at the piano. The inauguration ended with the screening of the diploma film FRUITS AND VEGETABLES by Maciej Jankowski from the Film and Television Directing Department.

The film was shortlisted for the BAFTA Student Film Awards 2022 as the only Polish film. It was also presented in the prestigious Future Frames: Generation NEXT of European Cinema section during the international film festival in Karlovy Vary.
