- I used the style of the Elderly Gents Cabaret and the songs "Do ciebie szłem" sung by Wiesław Gołas and "Stacyjka Zdrój" by Kalina Jędrusik - says Maciej Buchwald, a third year direction student.

Maciej Buchwald directed the second out of the ten films being made during Ewa Braun workshop in art direction, costume and make up, taking place at the Lodz Film School from 18 till 21 March. – It’s a story about a cameraman who’s head over heels in love with an actress. During the workshop we learn to recreate the aesthetics of the period to make it look real. We have fun and learn things.

Ewa Braun, an art director and interior designer, is a member of the American Film Academy and the Polish Film Academy. She is an Oscar winner for art direction for Steven Spielberg’s „Schindler’s List”. - My workshop is based on the cooperation of three departments: direction, cinematography and acting - says Ewa Braun. The workshop participants, who make their short films, are the third year students of those departments. – It’s also becoming a tradition for the Lodz Film School to cooperate with the Warsaw Fine Arts Academy whose students Agata Zalewska and Paulina Mazoń have worked with us within the workshop scheme.

Eri Mizutani has directed a film about a girl mourning her beloved who appears as a ghost in her changing room. - The aim of the workshop is to present in a practical way how a costume, make-up and art direction build up a character. This year the students are supposed to create the atmosphere of a cabaret, to direct and perform a hit, a stage number, a dance at an entertainment club – explains Ewa Braun. – The students themselves decide whether they want to focus on a vocal piece, dance or others. They can look for inspiration in the films like „The Artist” by Jean Dujardin, Brecht’s songs, or Polish classical cabaret. The art direction in the films has to be based either around the year 1904, or the 30ties or 50ties.

Maciej Buchwald’s film has been photographed by Tomasz Gajewski; production: Jagoda Likowiec; costumes and make-up: Międzynarodowe Studium Dziewulskich (make-up artists - Małgorzata Maytkut – leading artist, Marta Górska & Katarzyna Jankowska and assistants – Agnieszka Lesiuk, Izabela Kostecka, Małgorzata Ejmocka & Anna Geryk).
