The screenplay authors of the film “BROTHER”, Maciej Sobieszczański (graduate and lecturer) and Grzegorz Puda (5th year student), are the winners of the Krzysztof Kieślowski ScripTeast Award 2020 for

Best East European Screenplay.

Maciej Sobieszczański and Grzegorz Puda, who wrote the screenplay for the film “Brother”, proved to be the best among the 14 finalists of this year's ScripTeast. The program was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

The winning script is an emotional study of brotherly relations in the face of great pressure. As emphasized by the awarding Artistic Council “The script stands apart as a work of exceptional emotional impact, depicting the realistic and universal story of one family's dramatic struggles. Caught between divided loyalties at home, the main character must come to terms with the disappointment of first love and his hopes for a better life.”

The best screenplay was chosen by the members of the Artistic Council: Doreen Boonekamp (former head of the Dutch Film Fund), Sandy Lieberson (long-time head of 20th Century Fox), Antonio Saura (producer and head of the Latido distribution company), Manfred Schmidt (former head of MDM, one of the largest German film funds), Simon Perry (former head of the ACE - European Producers' Club) and Christian Routh and Tom Abrams, scientific heads of the programme.

ScripTeast is a master programme perfecting the skills of screenwriters from Central and Eastern Europe, organized by the Independent Film Foundation, with the support of the European Union Program - Creative Europe - Media component, Polish Film Institute, Apple Film Production. with the cooperation of European Film Academy and renowned associations of international producers: Producers Network, European Producers Club, Transatlantic Partners and ACE and FIlmarket Hubi Film New Europe.

Among European programmes of this type, it has the highest percentage of films made: as many as 53 out of 160 screenplays. During the programme’s 14 year history , 220 authors participated in it, with 160 scripts from 15 countries, including 47 Polish authors.
