A student film, FAMILY² directed by Yifan Sun and produced by the Lodz Film School, has won a Student Oscar®!

Yifan Sun accepts the Gold medal in the International Documentary category for “Family²” during the 46th Annual Student Academy Awards on Thursday, October 17, in Beverly Hills.

This year's competition for student awards of the American Film Academy was entered by a record number of 1.615 films submitted by film schools from around the world. A few weeks ago, the only Polish production was on the short list of three short documentary films with chances for an award in the "Documentary (International Film Schools)" category.

Today, we learn that Yifan Sun has joined the prestigious group of winners of the most important student film award in the world! These include, among others: Pete Docter, Robert Zemeckis, Patricia Riggen, Cary Fukunaga, Patricia Cardoso and Spike Lee.

Student Academy Awards were established in 1972. Every year, the Academy awards prizes in 4 student categories: feature, documentary, animation and alternative / experimental film. In parallel, next to the category for student films from the United States, the same categories apply for students of film schools from abroad. During their "adult" career, the laureates of the student Oscar received 62 nominations and 11 statuettes in the history of the Oscars.

This year's student Oscars ceremony will be held on October 17 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.

Lola was born in China, Ningdu County. She is the third child of her parents. Shortly after her birth, she is taken from her family home by a midwife who is supposed to look after the family. Her parents can't keep Lola in accordance with the ‘’one-child only’’ policy. She is soon adopted by a Belgian family who surrounds her with love and support. For years, Lola dreams of meeting her biological parents but she has no idea who they are or how to find them. In the summer of 2018 her dream finally comes true. Thanks to the efforts of Christine, her adoptive mother, Lola and her Belgian family go to China to meet Lola’s parents for the first time. Both families overcome language and cultural barriers and get closer to each other day by day. Lola finally manages to understand her story. By the end of their stay, Belgians and Chinese are like one big family of Lola’s.
