The only one in Poland –an exclusive and complex workshop on the art of creating a puppet for stop motion animation will be held in Lodz from 19, August to 18, Sept.

The aim of the project, "The Art of Creating a Puppet" is to familiarize participants with the process and techniques of making animation puppets. A month-long course devoted to this aim will consist of lectures and practical workshops during which the twelve selected participants will learn how the puppet production process is being carried out step by step. “It is an interdisciplinary and innovative project combining the art of animated film with other fields of artistic creation, especially with sculpture”, explains Justyna Rucińska from Likaon, one of the project's partners.

Theoretical lectures and workshops will take place at the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts. The classes will be run by the outstanding artists, Marcin Zalewski - a puppeteer, sculptor, props designer who has worked in the animation industry for over 10 years and Sylwia Nowak, co-creator of puppets and stage design for the production of animated puppet films made with the classic technique of stop-motion animation as well as puppet theatre performances. Both of them have participated in many successful projects, including the "Island of Dogs" by Wes Anderson and the Oscar-winning "Peter and the Wolf". “Creating a puppet, which in the animated film plays the role of an actor, is definitely a job for the perseverant. Its looks, ability to mimic or a characteristic way of moving - all this is the result of the creator's unique concept and matching it with the proper technique of making the puppet”, explains Sylwia Nowak. –“During practical classes, the participants will work in two-person teams making 6 puppets altogether within the time provided for the workshop. These puppets will later be presented during a special exhibition” says Marcin Zalewski. “We will have at our disposal a fully-equipped puppetry studio, which will allow participants to acquire the skills of designing and making puppets using various techniques”, he adds.

"The Art of Creating a Puppet" is the result of cooperation of several representatives of the Lodz animation industry: Likaon, Toto Studio, Momakin, individual artists and the Association of Polish Animation Producers. The idea of joint activities was born during the work on awarding Łódź the title of the Unesco City of Film. “We have decided to meet the needs of the market where the puppet production specialists are highly valued due to the growing number of puppet productions”, says Paulina Zacharek from Momakin. “The project will be summed up on October 9 during a substantive conference on the educational needs of the industry which will accompany the Animarkt Stop Motion Forum 2019”, adds Zacharek.

The organizer of the training, "The Art of Creating a Puppet" is the Association of Polish Animation Producers (SPPA). The project's partner is the Academy of Fine Arts named after Władysław Strzemiński in Łódź. The supporting partner is the EC1 Łódź City of Culture - Łódź Film Commission, and substantive support is provided by the Lodz Film School. The project is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
