Transatlantyk Festival 2019 has announced the programme of its 9. edition.

While reminiscing about the phenomenal, pioneering journey of Apollo 11, which took place in June 1969, we will take a look at other grand projects and dreams of humankind. Cinema is a perfect vessel for them – it's no coincidence that one of the first films ever made was "A Trip to the Moon" by George Melies.

We have prepared a journey for our audience too – through the darkness of the screening rooms to many different new worlds.

Over 50 films will be screened as Polish premieres to the Łódź audience. The festival audience will select the best film out of the 35 premieres in the New Cinema section. The chosen film will receive the third Transatlantyk Distribution Award of 40,000 PLN, which will help it to reach new audiences.

This year, we especially recommend the retrospective of Wojciech Marczewski’s films. His unique works remind us that "enslavement" can take different shapes and forms, sometimes rather alluring ones. This section will be inaugurated by the unveiling of Wojciech Marczewski’s star in the Łódź Stars Avenue.

Mexican maestro director Arturo Ripstein has accepted our invitation to the Festival. He directed his first film before Neil Armstrong's space flight. Ripstein also made "one giant leap" – he changed the way his homeland was presented in the cinema. The audience will get a chance to see the results by watching films personally chosen by Arturo Ripstein for the festival, and then by taking part in his masterclass. The director will also come to Łódź to receive the FIPRESCI 94 Platinum Award, a prestigious recognition granted to the most outstanding filmmakers by FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics. Transatlantyk Festival is the only festival in Poland, and one of only two festivals in the world, to present this award.

The pride and joy of the festival each year are those events which are original, and which cannot be experienced elsewhere. Besides film screenings, including the Cinema in Bed VOX section, Transatlantyk also offers the prestigious and unique composing competition - the Transatlantyk Instant Composition Contest ™. The contest is devoted to the art of improvisation in connection with moving images. This ability is an important foundation of the composer’s craft. It can open the door to a successful career.

One of the most important and exclusive events of Transatlantyk Festival is the Culinary Cinema. The program was originally created by Thomas Struck. It is proof that cinema and food can inspire each other. It is an invitation to not only indulge in a luxurious meal, but, more importantly, to spend quality time in conversation with interesting people.

We like to call Transatlantyk a festival of ideas. From its inauguration, the festival has referred to itself as GLOCAL: that is, local in activity and identity, and at the same time, global in the sense of the consequences and context of these activities.

We recommend our lectures and debates to you. In Transatlantyk’s Parlor, curated and hosted by Rafał Woś, outstanding minds will meet to talk about the interrupted social and political dreams of our society.
