The outstanding cinematographer and our Teacher passed away at the age of 89.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Witold Sobociński.

One of the first graduates of the Cinematography Department. Member of the legendary jazz band, “Melomani”. As a director of photography he worked on film projects with such directors as Jerzy Skolimowski ("Ręce do góry"), Andrzej Wajda ("Wszystko na sprzedaż", "Wesele", "Ziemia obiecana" – together with Edward Kłosiński and Wacław Dybowski), Wojciech Jerzy Has ("Sanatorium pod klepsydrą"), Roman Polański ("Piraci", "Frantic"), Piotr Szulkin ("O-bi, o-ba. Koniec cywilizacji"), Krzysztof Zanussi ("Życie rodzinne"), and Andrzej Żuławski ("Trzecia część nocy").

Since the eighties, our Teacher – professor at the Cinematography Department has been greatly respected by his students, educated generations of cinematographers and been one of the most important Lodz Film School professors in its whole history.

He was a three-time winner of the Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Award, awards from the American Association of Cinematographers, "Eagle" for lifetime achievements, "Platinum Lions" in Gdynia, Special Award of the Association of Cinematographers (PSC) and Polish Filmmakers Association Award for outstanding artistic achievements.

Always at the Lodz Film School, he will remain with us for ever.
