Workshops by Polish screenwriter and director - documentarian working in the USA will be conducted at our School on 8th of March. All students are invited.

Marian Marzyński, Polish citizen of Jewish origin, who survived the Warsaw ghetto, he emigrated from Poland after the events of March 68. During that time he had a very successful debut in his filmography - “Powrót Statku” (1963) that referred to the style of cinéma vérité, received Grand Prix at Krakow Film Festival), numerous feature stories and television programs. From Poland he reached Denmark, from there – USA, where he lives and works to this day. He lectured in a renowned Rhode Island School of Design (among his students i.e. Gus van Sant) and consequently he build his path as a document film maker. With his film “Powrót do Polski” (1980) he began a series of documentary films showing Polish August and a country under Martial Law from the point of view of film maker visiting his old country and telling about it to the world without limitations of censorship. He achieved many goals in USA as documentarian, raising the subject of America identity in a country build by new waves of emigrants. The central part of his film making is the topic of Holocaust, dramatically worked into his own biography. One especially worth mentioning is the epic, three hour long “Shtetl" (1996) a touching tale about Jewish inhabitants of Brańsk, small town in the eastern Poland, whom film director found in different corners of the world. For this film Marzyński won a Grand Prix during a prestigious Cinema du Reel Festival in Paris. The topic of childhood during Holocaust is revisited in his film serving as confession “Nigdy nie zapomnij kłamać/Never forget to lie” In this documentary story about Jewish children rescued from Warsaw ghetto Marzyński combined the narrative from his biography with stories of few other survivors, those persons together with him started in the summer of 2012 an exceptional journey in time.

Workshops at Film School in Łódź will be conducted as part of classes for direction and direction of photography, however we invite all the students to participate.
