Witold Adamek, an outstanding cinematographer, director, screenwriter, producer and graduate from our film school, has passed away on the 18th February. He was 71 years old.

Witold Adamek was born on the 7th November 1945 in Łódź. He was the son of Stefan Adamek, a respected production manager. As a student of the Cinematography department, he graduated from our film school. His debut as a cinematographer came in the 1975 television films entitled ‘Punkt wyjścia’ and ‘Siedem czerwonych róż czyli Benek Kwiaciarz o sobie i o innych’, both directed by Jerzy Sztwiertnia. In 1975, Witold Adamek also completed his first feature length film, ‘Grzech Antoniego Grudy’, also directed by Jerzy Sztwiertnia.

He worked as a cinematographer in over 170 films, series and television plays. Of particular note were titles such as: ‘Matka Królów’ directed by Janusz Zaorski, ‘Nadzór’ directed by Wiesława Saniewskiego, ‘Yesterday’ directed by Radosław Piwowarski,’C.K. Dezerterzy’ directed by Janusz Majewski, ‘Piłkarski poker’ directed by Janusz Zaorski,’Krótki film o miłości’ directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski and ‘Spis cudzołożnic’ directed by Jerzy Stuhr.

Witold Adamek also directed many television plays, feature films and series. As a director, he made his debut with the 1997 film entitled ‘Poniedziałkiem’, for which he won the Grand Prix at the Koszalin Film Festival. His subsequent films were: ‘Wtorek’, ‘Miss mokrego podkoszulka’ and ‘Samotność w sieci’ alongside the television series ‘Rodzina zastępcza’ and ‘Czwarta władza’.

He was also involved in film production, having produced ‘Spis cudzołożnic’ directed by Jerzy Stuhr, ‘Girl Guide’ directed by Juliusz Machulski and ‘Daleko od noszy’ directed by Jan Jakub Kolski, amongst others.

Witold Adamek was nominated for numerous film awards – including Eagles and Golden Lions. In 1985, at the Polish Film Festival in Gdańsk he was applauded for his work as a cinematographer on ‘Nadzór’ directed by Wiesław Saniewski, ‘Yesterday’ directed by Radosław Piwowarski and ‘Baryton’ directed by Janusz Zaorski. Three years later, at the same festival, Wotld Adamek was singled out for his great work as a cinematographer on ‘Dotknięci’ directed by Wiesław Saniewski, ‘Krótki film o miłości’ directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski and ‘Obywatela Piszczyk’ directed by Andrzej Kotkowski.

He passed away on the 18th February at the age of 71.
