When did a breakthrough occur in Polish theatre? What title instigated it? Which director was behind it?

Prof. dr hab. Krystyna Duniec from the Polish Academy of Sciences will reveal all to the students of the Acting Department.

On the 18th January 1997, the Variety Theatre in Warsaw premiered Grzegorz Jarzyn’s debuting play ‘The Tropical Craze’. That same day Krzysztof Warlikowski showcased, for the first time in Warsaw, Eurypides’ ‘Electra’ at the Dramatic Theatre.

In line with critical opinion, the above date signified a new chapter in the history of Polish theatre by revealing a contemporary aesthetic that appealed to a younger audience. January 2017 marks the passing of 20 years since that historic date. As a result, prof. dr hab. Krystyna Duniec, representing the Department of the History and Theory of Theatre at The Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, will hold a lecture with students from the Film School’s Acting Department on 17th January (Tuesday) at 14:00. Łukasz Maciejewski will oversee proceedings.
